About the Group

Dianne Newman - Founder of Absolutely LeglessAbsolutely Legless was started in 1997 by Dianne Newman, who has competed in numerous world championships, and taught pupils from across the globe. She was keen to create a group which would offer something for people of all ages and backgrounds, which is apparent in the diverse range of members.

Whether you are an adult beginner who loves the Irish traditional culture, or an established competitive dancer, there is a place for you in the group.

Inspired by the Irish hard and soft shoe traditions, Absolutely Legless perform original dances in a relaxed and informal manner while remaining faithful to their roots. The dancers combine the grace of the soft shoes with the power and rhythmic precision of the hard shoes to provide a truly exhilarating experience.

This approach is reflected in the music from the band, which seamlessly weaves the evocative melodies and driving rhythms of Irish dance music. The unique line-up of fiddles, flutes and guitar play new arrangements of traditional and original airs, jigs and reels.

This combination of the energy of the dancers and Celtic rhythms of the band entertains audiences every time and Absolutely Legless are well-received wherever they appear.

The group last year performed at 2 major international festivals in Montignac (France) and Jaca (Spain) where they performed alongside dancers and musicians from as far afield as Colombia and Costa Rica. Other tours have included Hungary, Sicily, Turkey and Poland, and earlier this year the group appeared on BBC’s Tonight’s the Night, and RTE’s Nationwide. This year, they performed in the well established Folkmoot USA festival in North Carolina, as well as successfully selling out their show at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Whether it is the fast moving steps, the lilting lyrics, or the foot tapping music that you enjoy, you will be guaranteed an evening full of traditional Irish entertainment.
